These thick and chewy brown butter chocolate chip cookies offer a rich, nutty flavor with a gooey center and crisp edges, perfect for quick homemade treats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, browned
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup (165 g) packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ cups (280 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (340 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Place 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter in a stainless steel saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously until the butter melts, foams, and turns golden brown with a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and transfer to a heatproof bowl to cool for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add ¾ cup granulated sugar and ¾ cup packed light brown sugar to the browned butter. Stir until combined.
  3. Beat in 2 large eggs, one at a time, followed by 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and glossy.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Stir gently with a spatula until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  6. Fold in 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly.
  7. Optional: Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour to firm up the dough for thicker, chewier cookies.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  9. Using a cookie scoop or spoon, drop dough balls about 2 tablespoons (30 g) each onto the baking sheet, spaced 2 inches apart.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are golden but centers still look slightly underbaked.
  11. Remove cookies from oven and let sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

Watch the butter closely when browning to avoid burning. Chilling the dough is recommended for thicker, chewier cookies but can be skipped if short on time. Pull cookies out of the oven when centers are still soft for the perfect chewy texture. Avoid overmixing the dough to prevent tough cookies.
