A happy accident turned into the ultimate Halloween party punch. This spiked apple cider sangria combines dry white wine, apple cider, bourbon, and fresh fruit for a light, bright, and festive drink that disappears first at every party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine (Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) apple cider (unfiltered)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) bourbon (mid-range like Maker’s Mark or Bulleit)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) orange liqueur (triple sec or Cointreau)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) pure maple syrup
  • 2 medium apples (Honeycrisp or Fuji), cut into thin wedges
  • 1 medium orange, sliced into thin rounds and halved
  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries (optional)
  • 23 cinnamon sticks
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish
  • 1 cup (240 ml) ginger ale or sparkling apple cider (add just before serving)

Instructions

  1. Prep the fruit: Wash apples and orange. Cut apples into thin wedges (about 1/4 inch thick). Slice orange into thin rounds, then cut each round in half. Rinse cranberries if using.
  2. Mix the sweetener: In a small bowl, combine maple syrup and orange liqueur. Stir until well blended.
  3. Build the base: In a large pitcher or punch bowl, add sliced apples, orange rounds, cranberries, and cinnamon sticks. Pour the maple syrup mixture over the fruit. Gently press the fruit with a wooden spoon to release juices and oils.
  4. Add the liquids: Pour in white wine, apple cider, and bourbon. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Chill: Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4-6 hours. The flavors meld and deepen over time.
  6. Add the fizz: Just before serving, pour in ginger ale or sparkling apple cider. Stir gently to keep bubbles.
  7. Serve: Fill glasses with ice. Pour sangria over ice, ensuring each glass gets some fruit. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig and an extra cinnamon stick if desired.

Notes

For best results, chill the sangria base for at least 4-6 hours. The flavors improve after 24 hours. Add the fizzy element just before serving to keep bubbles. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine, bourbon, and orange liqueur with sparkling apple cider, ginger ale, and apple juice. The sangria keeps in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; strain out old fruit and add fresh slices before serving again. Freeze the base (without fizzy element) for up to 3 months.
