This rich and creamy slow cooker spiked hot chocolate is the perfect adult treat for gatherings. Made with simple ingredients and your choice of alcohol, it’s a cozy, crowd-pleasing drink that warms you from the inside out.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1/2 cup peppermint schnapps (or dark rum, Irish cream, or 1/3 cup bourbon)
  • Optional toppings: mini marshmallows, whipped cream, crushed candy canes, chocolate shavings, cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Add about 1/2 cup of the milk and whisk until smooth to form a paste.
  2. Pour remaining milk and heavy cream into a 6- to 7-quart slow cooker. Add the cocoa paste and whisk until well combined.
  3. Add semisweet chocolate chips if using.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours. Stir after 1 hour to ensure chocolate chips are melted.
  5. Turn slow cooker to warm. Stir in vanilla extract and your choice of alcohol. Taste and adjust sweetness or alcohol level as desired.
  6. Ladle into mugs and serve with desired toppings.

Notes

Don’t skip making the cocoa paste to avoid lumps. Add alcohol at the end to preserve flavor. Keep on warm for no more than 4 hours to prevent milk from separating. For a kid-friendly version, omit alcohol and add extra vanilla or peppermint extract.
