This crockpot peppermint hot chocolate is the ultimate party drink—rich, creamy, and perfectly minty. With just 10 minutes of prep, the slow cooker does all the work, letting you enjoy your own gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk (1.4 liters)
  • 2 cups heavy cream (475 ml)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (340 grams)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (50 grams)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100 grams)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (10 ml)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract (7.5 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies, for garnish
  • Whipped cream, for serving
  • Chocolate shavings, optional, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease the inside of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to prevent clumps.
  3. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into the slow cooker. Turn it on low heat.
  4. Whisk the cocoa mixture into the milk until fully incorporated, about 2 minutes.
  5. Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and stir. Stir every 10 minutes for the first half hour as they melt.
  6. After about 45 minutes, when the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth, stir in the vanilla extract and peppermint extract. Start with 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract, taste, and add more if desired (I usually use 1 1/2 teaspoons).
  7. Cover and cook on low for 2 to 3 hours, stirring every 30 minutes. The longer it cooks, the more the flavors meld.
  8. Before serving, taste and adjust sweetness or peppermint strength. Add a tiny pinch more salt if needed.
  9. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of crushed peppermint candies, and chocolate shavings if using. Serve immediately.
  10. Leave the slow cooker on warm or low so guests can serve themselves throughout the party.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use oat milk and full-fat canned coconut milk instead of heavy cream. Ensure chocolate chips are dairy-free. If the hot chocolate is too thick, whisk in extra milk; if too thin, cook uncovered for 30 minutes. If you add too much peppermint extract, stir in more cream to balance. The flavors deepen after a day in the fridge.
