Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 8 hot dogs (regular, all-beef, chicken, or turkey)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Yellow or Dijon mustard (for dipping sauce)
  • Honey or mayonnaise (optional, to mix with mustard for creaminess)
  • Thin slices of cheddar or mozzarella cheese (optional)
  • Black sesame seeds or peppercorns (for eyes)
  • Fresh herbs like thyme or smoked paprika (optional, for flavor)
  • Gluten-free puff pastry or almond flour dough (optional, for gluten-free version)
  • Melted coconut oil (optional, for dairy-free egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Thaw the puff pastry according to package instructions until pliable but still cool.
  3. Slice the hot dogs in half lengthwise for smaller mummies or leave whole for classic size. Pat dry if wet.
  4. Cut the puff pastry into narrow strips about 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide, long enough to wrap around the hot dogs with some overlap.
  5. Optional: Place a thin slice of cheese on each hot dog before wrapping.
  6. Wrap the hot dogs by spiraling the pastry strips around them, leaving small gaps for the eyes. Do not wrap too tightly.
  7. Place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, spacing about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart.
  8. Brush each wrapped hot dog with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  9. Place black sesame seeds or peppercorns where the eyes should be.
  10. Bake for 15–18 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden brown, checking around 12 minutes to avoid burning.
  11. While baking, whisk together mustard with honey and mayonnaise for the dipping sauce.
  12. Let the mummy hot dogs cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Keep puff pastry cold while working to maintain flakiness. Do not overwrap pastry strips to avoid doughy texture. Use egg wash generously but lightly for a golden sheen. Check baking progress early to prevent burning. Refrigerate wrapped hot dogs if prepping ahead and bake just before serving. Reheat leftovers in oven at 350°F for 5–7 minutes to restore crispness. Avoid microwaving to keep pastry crispy.
