This cozy salted caramel apple crisp with oat crumble is the perfect dessert for rainy evenings and fall gatherings. Tender, caramel-soaked apples are topped with a buttery oat crumble and finished with flaky sea salt for an irresistible sweet-salty treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (about 2.5 pounds), peeled, cored, and sliced into ¼-inch thick pieces
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup salted caramel sauce
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, grated
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Extra salted caramel sauce for drizzling
  • Flaky sea salt for finishing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until every apple slice is coated. Stir in ½ cup salted caramel sauce gently, leaving some pockets of caramel.
  3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and salt. Grate cold butter directly into the dry ingredients using the large holes of a box grater. Toss to combine until mixture resembles coarse meal with some pea-sized butter pieces. Fold in nuts if using.
  4. Spread apple filling evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle oat crumble topping evenly over the apples, squeezing some into bigger clumps for extra texture.
  5. Place dish on a baking sheet and bake for 40-45 minutes, until filling is bubbling around edges and topping is golden brown and firm. If topping browns too quickly, tent with foil after 30 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes. Drizzle with extra salted caramel sauce and sprinkle with flaky sea salt before serving.

Notes

For best texture, use a mix of apple varieties like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith. Grating cold butter into the oat mixture creates perfect craggy crumbles. Let the crisp rest for at least 10 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set. To restore crunch when reheating, use an oven or air fryer instead of a microwave.
