A simple, comforting fall dessert featuring a tart and sweet filling of apples and cranberries topped with a buttery, crunchy crumble. This easy-to-make pie requires minimal prep time and uses pantry staples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries, rinsed and patted dry
  • 3/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples and fresh cranberries.
  3. Sprinkle granulated sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt over the fruit.
  4. Toss gently to coat all fruit pieces evenly.
  5. Let the fruit mixture sit for 10 minutes to draw out juices.
  6. In a separate medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  7. Cut the cold, cubed butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter chunks.
  8. Pour the fruit mixture into a 9-inch pie dish and spread evenly.
  9. Sprinkle the crumble topping generously over the fruit, pressing down lightly.
  10. Place the pie dish on a baking sheet to catch drips.
  11. Bake for 45-50 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling vigorously.
  12. If the topping browns too quickly, cover edges with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  13. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. To prevent a soggy bottom, ensure the pie dish is preheated if using glass. Keep butter cold for the topping to ensure a flaky texture. The pie is best served slightly warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
